Default Backup schedule on custom hours like stats process [Case 56301]

    Hi,
i would like to request this feature:

possibility to execute backup ONLY in some period for example from 00:00 to 08:00 A.M. like awstats, analog and webalizer processes.

I ask this because WHM backup feature it's great but it takes MUCH I/O resources. Execute it during night would be best because it does not slow down any website during day.

    Waiting for your reply

    Best regards

As you may already be aware, in WHM's cPanel section, if you go to Manage Plugins you can install the "cronconfig" plugin to control when the cron job for cpbackup is run.

However, I can see a situation arise where too little time is permitted to allow cpbackup to make all its daily backups (if daily backups are enabled). While people may be annoyed with missing stats, customers are more likely to be irate if they discover their hosting provider cannot overcome a catastrophic hardware failure because they have no backup of their account.

Yes you are right for daily backup, but For weekly or monthly backup run backup only during night hours is better for I/O performance without any doubt, when you have a lot of cPanel accounts on same servers that works normally without backup process and start be slow when backup will be executed.

Seconded. We have currently 26 cPanel servers and they all take weekly backups to a mounted network storage.

One backup round takes more than 12 hours to complete so setting the cron to start at night doesn't really help, because it will still be running next day during peak hours.

There should be a feature that allows the backup process to stop in the morning and resume next night, just like the stats processor.

I hope cPanel could look into developing this.

Rather than having weekly and monthly backups for cPanel sent to a mounted storage device using cpbackup (WHM's Backup > Configure Backup tool), why not have daily backups on the machine run, then for the monthly and weekly backups use a cron job to scp or better yet rsync the files over to the mounted storage device? That would take far less time and be less server intensive.
