Hello it would be nice if FTP account creation was not mandatory when adding a new addon domain.
Hello it would be nice if FTP account creation was not mandatory when adding a new addon domain.
I found an existing internal report filed with our developers that matches the description of this feature request; accordingly, I have updated the thread with the internal case number, that of case 5374, and set the feature request status to filed so that it is more easily recognized as having been formally submitted for future development consideration. Please keep in mind that this feature is not yet planned, but if this status changes and a target version is determined for implementation then we will update this thread with the ETA version number to keep everyone informed. For reference, if implemented, the case number may be found in the official change log, as linked here: cPanel & WHM Change Logs
I encourage anyone interested in this feature request to continue to share your thoughts and suggestions about desired implementation so that we can know more precisely what everyone is seeking in terms of how the feature should work. As an example for discussion, would you prefer to have FTP accounts not created at all, or would you prefer it to be dependent upon an optional check-box that the cPanel user must toggle in order to have an FTP user account created with a new add-on domain?

Nice Idea,
If we could modify the FTP account on the fly or the options to pick an FTP account for new addon domains that would be great too![]()
Definitely would love to see this. Almost none of our customers ever use the FTP account that is created, and almost every time I show someone how to create an addon domain, I tell them to just put in gibberish into the FTP field since very rarely do they use it. It's frustrating to have the same conversation with our customers every single time about this... "Just put some random name in the FTP fields, you wont use it."
Even worse, the most common situation is someone adding three domains pointing to a single subdirectory (i.e. mydomain.com, mydomain.org, mydomain.net). All these have to be added as add-on domains despite pointing to the same directory, BUT, I am forced to create a new FTP account for each one.
In my opinion, I wouldnt even create the FTP account when making an add-on domain. If there are some people who actually use it, then at least make it an option that is *off* by default.
Making an FTP account at time of add-on domain creation is one of the top-ten questions we get from customers because it makes no sense to them (or us).
The use of a checkbox makes sense to me. Some people will need a separate FTP account for their add-on domains but most will not. I think only a small percentage of my customers actually do, so forcing it doesn't make much sense to me. Most of my customers just use their main FTP account to upload files to their add-on domains.
For some reason, cPanel has been allowing my customers to create add-on domains with only 1 FTP account allowed in their package. It's probably a bug and it effects most accounts, but it's a 'good' bug as far as I'm concerned. Forcing an FTP account on every add-on domain seems excessive. Lastly, I sell reseller packages and I don't want non-reseller packages to be able to create an FTP account with an add-on domain and try to sell it as a hosting.
