install plugins as easy as wordpress

It would be great to be able to install plugins exactly that way one does in wordpress.

This would be specially useful to resellers in shared hosting environments where we have no access to the command line AND are told that any plugin installed will affect all others resellers (is that true by the way?)

Some plug-ins do things that resellers are not allowed to do, some could be buggy and as far as I know all have the potential of upsetting the whole server if they are wrongly coded.

There is a big difference between a simple wordpress account and a control pannel used by multiple sites.

If cPanel could make a system that would limit the damages that could be caused by a reseller installing a bad plugin and also limit this plugin to his user and supply a system so resellers could select from a list or search in this list for allowed plugins. Plug-ins that could be allowed or disallowed by the server administrator then I would not be against this.

If you are a reseller and your host won't install the plugin you are looking for and if this plugin does not affect the other users then maybe you sould look for a host that will install the plugin you requested.

I'm curious, what would a plugin that doesn't have root access (instead, just the level of access a reseller has) do on a cPanel&WHM server?

Good question. I don't belive in this feature request as we prefer to install the plugins and for the plugins to allow our resellers to configure / activated them. Here are a few that could (with difficuly) be made to work (that do not exist at the time being) :

Google Apps
Script installers
Webmail installers
Log analizers

These could potentially be installed on a resellers disk space even though most server admins would not want them to be presented as individual reseller plugins.
