Default Re: Enforce a per-mailbox SMTP rate limit

I completely agree that a per mailbox outbound limit is necessary, especially in the case of a domain with lots of users. In fact I'm in that situation right now. I've inherited a domain from a local ISP that went out of business. It's got roughly 250 mailboxes still active. In order for individual users to be able to send mail normally, a somewhat higher domain limit would be required. However also having a per mailbox limit would prevent any single user (or someone's infected machine) from gobbling up the entire domain limit thus triggering restrictions on everyone.

This is a concern our Product Manager shares. We could probably optimize a few things, but regardless - this will be a noticeable uptick in overhead to do per-email account limitations.

I apparently created a duplicate thread myself at one point. Merging together .

Of course. Think on the database holding the limits set for one and every email account in the box. The queries should use some kind of cache to keep up with the most used accounts without doing overwhelming amount of queries.

The best workaround I can imagine is to add the feature capable of setting a limited amount of individual email accounts to be set for limits. Let's say, 40-50 email accounts. If you have more abusers than that, just kick'em off

Nope. They are not entirely the same issues.
In http://forums.cpanel.net/f145/mail-s...tml#post640161 we were discussing about the possibility of an WHM UI to manage domain sending limits. That is a really good request to avoid touching the maxemails file.

One goal of such functionality would be to avoid punishing other email users on a domain simply because 1 user decided to be abusive by means of sending bulk email.

Would you find this feature useful? Do you have any suggestions on how we should implement this feature?
    Hi David,

This is indeed a good idea.

    BUT, I want to add:

The server owner (i.e. root), as well as the reseller, and domain owner should have the option to enable / disable the limits.

i.e. if the reseller desices to limit a user, then the domain owner can't remote the limits
and if the server owner decides to limit a user, then neither the reseller or server owner can remove the limits.

+1 for limits per email account.

I would actually like to keep the per domain limit and allow cPanel users to be able to choose the limit on a per account basis, just like with the disk quota.

I a user is allowed 500 e-mails per hour, they might want to set the address that they send their emailing lists to 400 in order to allow other addresses to keep on working when they go over the limit.

11.32 brings soft limits, if cPanel users could also set soft limits on a per account basis, this would allow them to allow an account to send a large amount of e-mails over multiple hours without stopping other accounts from functioning.

This could be very handy for users that don't have software that can manage multiple sendings.
