Default Parallels H-Sphere Migration to cPanel

    Good day:

Please consider adding Parallels H-Sphere to source control panel types your migration team migrates to cpanel.

Parallels H-Sphere stores all customer information (web sites, email addresses, etc.) in one central database on the H-Sphere control panel (sometimes called a management node) server.

There are a number of Parallels H-Sphere providers who would love to work with your migrations team to migrate to cPanel.

    Thank you.

H-Sphere is a multi-server (or node) product, correct?

If that is true then the migration would need to:

    1. Have access to the master node/server to obtain a list of available accounts to transfer
    2. Have access to all the child nodes/servers to effect the transfers

The current migration system is not designed to handle a multi-server/node setup and would require significant redesign to make this work.

How predicable are the setups of the child nodes? Are the child nodes full systems of their own that may have N number of accounts? Is website data and configuration consistently stored in the same location on the child nodes?

    Good day, Kenneth:

H-Sphere has the potential to be a mult-server (multi-node) product. A number of small business hosting providers run H-Sphere on one single server.

For those that run H-Sphere with multiple servers, then yes, the migration team would need access to the control panel server as well as all other servers.

For H-Sphere to work, the control panel server must have ssh access to each of the other nodes. So just having access to the control panel server automatically gives one the right to ssh to each of the other nodes.

    Code:
    su -l cpanel
ssh root@[other node by host name or by ip]
The steps are predictable because all setups follow basic standards.

All HTML documents are stored in /hpshere/local/home/[user id]/[domain name]

All web site log files for a web site are stored in /hsphere/local/home/[user id]/logs/[domain name]

All mysql information is stored on the mysql service (which can be on its own server) in /var/lib/mysql

The access information for mysql is always located in /var/lib/mysql/.my.cnf

Email, which is handled by vpopmail and qmail, can be found in /var/qmail for qmail and /hsphere/local/var/vpopmail

Kenneth, there are a number of H-Sphere providers seeking ways to move away from Parallels completely for common reasons. It would be great if they had an option from cpanel.

    Thank you.

    Hi

I too would really like to see the option to migrate from Hsphere to Cpanel and I know from talking to others many more Hsphere users would like to see this too.

I have to say in the early days I did not like Cpanel but it has got better and better over the years and now see it as one of the best control panels for providers of shared hosting.

Any update on this request. I am also interested in this migration request. Has anyone tried to do it manually?

    +1 for the request.

One of the problems with H-Sphere is updating between major versions (say, from 3.2 to 3.5), where in many cases it practically forces you to reconfigure the entire server, so many H-Sphere admins still on the old version would like nothing more than to use this opportunity to migrate to a better control panel. I believe this can be exploited into great sales potential for cPanel as well.

Thumbs up Re: Parallels H-Sphere Migration to cPanel

Yes, this would certainly be handy. Although, having native multiserver support in cPanel would be even better. eg natively supporting some of these things: http://forums.cpanel.net/f34/can-cpa...rs-189722.html

For the record, Parallels are trying to do this with a new "Multi Server Plesk" (but it's effectively a remake of HSphere's ideas, after they bought it, grrrr.). We are implementing some of the points as mentioned in that thread above with our new cPanel cluster. Some of the biggest web hosts out there were big HSphere owners, and some still are, but are looking for alternatives.

So cPanel Staff... are you interested in capturing a market of ex HSphere license holders?

You have a solid control panel base and with some tweaking it could easily become a very powerful system that the big hosts would seriously consider. The fact a "hack" to do multiserver (of sorts) exists, and was posted by cPanel staff, would suggest that adding native support to WHM should not be such a big task.

    Cheers,
    Paul
