Default Remote Backup via SSL and with encrypted archives [Case 55650]

What is needed to see a ssl ftp connection in the backup module (out of the box)? Another feature I would like to see is an encrypting of the archives.

Is there no customer demand or is the implementation that problematic? Addon for additional bucks?

Cpanel made big progress in many areas. Backup seems to be lacking, which might be our fault as customers. To sell a solid out of the box routine is not as sexy as having RoundCube etc. on board out of the box.

We are currently planning on overhauling backup in 11.25 (or 11.26).

    Nick,

Will it contain all a web-host would need to set up SFTP with Incremental backups?

I would absolutely love to ditch a few of the horrible hacked scripts we've had to implement on our servers.

We take a full backup once a week (each server jitters the backup stage using bmu over the 7 day period (Number of Accounts / 7)), and use a few scripts to incrementally back up every night.

This is an absolute pain when it comes to trying to recover the data - yes, it's all very well saying we back up daily, but recovering it is a nightmare.

Would be great if cPanel could introduce incremental backups over a secure medium with the ability to easily recover data when needed.

As an aside, and pretty much icing on the cake, encryption of the stored data would be sexy too (although, if that's going to happen, it would be good for WHM to give the webhost access to the private/public key to decrypt the data once it's backed up)

    Anyway,

Sounds very promising! Can't wait for a nice stable -incremental- backup solution.

Encrypted backups to Amazon S3 would be a great feature.

    Hi Nick,

Is there by chance a dev tracker where we could see what you're planning on doing with the backup script?

That would be nice. Perhaps when another few providers are going out of business and people lost their data the demand for a flexible and secure backup routine out of the box will be high enough. I hope I am wrong.

It's moving really slow towards 11.25. We are using 30% of bandwidth only to backup, daily. So incremental secure backups would be nice.

Also if ftp backup would offer database backup only, not whole site only.

Months have passed. What are the current plans for the overhaul of backup service?

Work is in progress on overhauling the backup system. Currently, I have no ETA on the completion of updates to the backup system.

I was wondering if you get closer to an ETA on the improved backup system? Is it still under development or has it been postponed?

I would love to see built-in alternatives to either FTP backups or R1Soft and Amazon S3 support would be perfect!

    Question

We clearly need a secure solution for off site incremental backups.

And a module able to dig in and get the file to restore from remote slave would be so great.

Is there an add-on or something for this?
    thanks!
