Default Show URL for files in File Manager [Case 14334]

    Hi there -

In the top right pane, the legacy file manager had a truly splendid link to grab the URL.

Sure, I can figure out & type a file's URL, but I'd much rather right-click & CTRL-V than have to type 30-60 characters.

So, if you could restore this functionality to the new file manager, I'd be ever so grateful.

    Cheers,

    - Richard

To confirm and clarify my understanding of the intended feature request, are you seeking to have the cPanel File Manager show or link to a publicly-accessible URL of a file -- and not just a private URL to view a file from within cPanel File Manager? I ask as I would like to revise the thread title to further describe the specific enhancement that is desired.

I'm sure, it would make file-organization much less stressing.
I hope this gets approved soon.

When a single file can be accessed via multiple URLs, which one should be displayed in File Manager? For example, if someone created the addon domain example.net on top of example.com and put the document root for example.net in ~/public_html/example/, when you highlight ~/public_html/example/, which URL should be displayed:

    • http://example.net/index.html
    • http://(server hostname)/~example/example/index.html
    • For each IP address on the server: http://(IP)/~example/example/index.html
    • For each domain on the server without mod_userdir protection: http://(other domain)/~example/example/index.html

What about if you have several thousand domains pointing to the same file (via the parked domain functionality)? This is a scenario that is encountered somewhat frequently with cPanel&WHM servers, hence I am asking how it should be addressed.

Do it however it is done in Legacy File Manager

Some customer rely on legacy file manager just for this feature, but to answer the question

    http://example.net/index.html is fine

Okay, so the URL displayed should be the URL that would have been displayed in Legacy File Manager?

Default Show URL for files in File Manager like Legacy File Manager

A customer asked that in File Manager when you click on a file that it gives you the URL like it does in Legacy File Manager. In Legacy File Manager when you click a file it brings up a menu on the right and one of the options is:

    Download File
    URL: http://cptest.com/hello.zip

Adding it on the menu when you right click a file in File Manager would be good.

Okay, so would everyone be okay with the URL being retrieved the same way it's done in Legacy File Manager?

In Legacy File Manager, navigating to an addon domain and clicking on the index.html I then get this URL on right menu:

    www.domain.com/addondomainname/index.html

While that link does work, its not a proper link. If a user is linking images from another of his domains like this at the very least this is going to skew his traffic stats one way or the other.

I spoke with a developer yesterday and he agreed this is feasible. So let's make this happen, please make sure my report (below) accurately reflects what you are looking for:

    Call for Comments

Currently, the Legacy File Manager has the ability to show the URL for files in File Manager. While the algorithm used for calculating URLs has known deficiencies and pre-dates the ability to have addon domains and subdomains located outside public_html, it is unlikely that those most reliant on this feature will notice these deficiencies. As a result, it is requested that a feature to determine the URL of a file in the new File Manager be implemented using the same algorithm that is used in Legacy File Manager.

Well ... I started this ball rolling, and it certainly works for me.

    Thanks.
