    Default Solr as installation package

A feature request that I guess could make many users pleased is getting Solr server up and running as Tomcat in the EasyApache build. Anyone for Solr?

If it is possible to run/install solr on a per user basis than a definate +1

I looked into installing solr some time ago and came to the conclusion that this was a per server installation and not per account, with no real way to control who acceses the data.

For those who don't know what solr is, it's a search engine that searches in data you send to it. Its very popular and would be a real plus in hosting Drupal sites !

Merci pour ça! Bien que j'ai finalement réussi à installer Solr. D'autres peuvent utiliser un paquet d'installation. Rileg la Suède

Sorry about not answering in French but people need to be able to understand in order to vote for this feature.

Did you install Solr for use with a single cPanel account or did you install Solr for use from a whole server / VPS ? All documentation I have found so far explains how to install Solr for a whole server / VPS and not for an individual cPanel account.

Any information about how you achieved this would be a great help towards getting more votes !

It seems that if cPanel were to integrate this, it would be possible to install solr on individual accounts. The main problem I encountered back then was that jailshell does not all users to run the java command and I did not want to give users access to non jailed shell.

    See here :
Install Apache Solr Multicore for Drupal | Linux Sysadmin Blog

More and more sites use solr to search their data, this seems viable if cpanel were to integrate functions to allow users to install solr and run it either on Jetty or Tomcat.

If cPanel is prepared to look into this and the possible issues that could arise (allowing users to run java ?, making sure that the java servers are started when the server is rebooted etc.) then I believe this is an option that would help us keep Drupal users on cPanel accounts instead of moving to Aegir servers/hosts.

Being able to install solr and supporting java with cpanel would be a definite plus.

agree. this would definitely save a lot of trouble for everyone who wants to get it up and running fast and not have to bother with the installation.

    off topic:
anyone here who has experience making SOLR available to one particular account on the server? any leads on how to get this done is most appreciated. thanks.

The fist step would be to remove jailed SSH (and set it to normal SSH) for that account…

So if I'm understanding this request properly, basically if Tomcat is installed, we should have something like an item in the Site Software section for Solr that offers a one-click installation of Solr for that cPanel account (first checking to ensure they have shell access)?

The ideal would be to not need to have shell access to run solr as you can access solr from a PHP script that runs commands to solr

I think cPanel would need to install a seperate instance of solr for each tomcat instance and would need to configure tomcat to run solr.

The idea is that scripts can then give solr a list of URL's to index and then request search results.

Most tutorials run solr on jetti and not tomcat but tomcat would be maybe an easier solution as cPanel already supports tomcat. It does seem however that cPanel would need to edit the tomcat configuration for each install of solr…

If cPanel could look into supporting solr on a per site/account basis, it would make a cPanel hosting account viable for lots of people who use dedicated hosing or VPS hosting to achieve this.

We would love to be able to offer cPanel hosting with solr and drush preinstalled as this would be a very apealing solution for the Drupal community.
