Here is another possible case:
The admin wants to install a single certificate to cover ALL services but doesn't want to buy a silly expensive wildcard domain, so he installs a certificate for "domain.com" (instead of *.domain.com) and tells his users to use each service by the top level domain:
so instead of: mail.domain.com, ftp.domain.com etc
we use: domain.com for everything
Thus, we covered all basic functionality, but with few exceptions. For example, webmail.domain.com wouldn't match our certificate so instead we would use domain.com/webmail.
