    Default Password Protect Directories

    Hello,

How secure is using the Password Protect Directories in cPanel?

I have a SSL installed and have a directory that I only want a couple of people to access as it has my clients usernames and passwords in it.

I have been told that the cPanel Password Protection is not very secure, and wanted to know how secure it is?

Can Robots etc view files inside directories that are password protected??

Is there any way of hacking in to the directory?

    How secure is it?

    Thanks, Chris.

.htaccess password protection should be fine as long as you use a hard to guess password.

Any particular reason or just a blanket "it's not secure" statement lacking specifics?

    No.

    1. If you use a weak password, it can be brute forced
    2. If you set global read/write permissions on the files in that directory, someone with access to the server could theoretically read those files (as you set such permissions)

I have no issues using it to protect content. I'd also recommend using leech protection if you are serious about protecting your content. Leech protection curbs the ability to effectively share usernames and passwords.
