Kindly do reduce the resources usage immediately or ask your programmer to check the scripts, below is the details of applications name being consuming high resources:

Well looks like the problem is apache is using a lot of cpu.

Most VPS's are somewhat cpu limited they're might not actually be a lot you can do, but it can just as easily be a problem in the code of the software your using. You may have to upgrade the vps with 800-900 users online all the time. You definitely need to increase the mysql connections, but I wouldn't do that until the problem is sorted since it will only make things worse.

However you may have some success tweaking apache.

The reason to increase MaxRequestPerChild is with your traffic apache will be forking new processes too much I think. Should probably be higher.

You can change those settings in WHM of course.

Also based on your apache process size I'm guessing your running no security at all. Your probably being pounded hard by bots and attackers. I would make sure to harden the server before going any further. It's a pretty clear indication your being pounded if you have a forum with 800-900 users and only 15 of them are logged in. That should be a red flag right away.

I have a small board I run for a client that has from 50-100 users online during the course of the day. Usually they're is always 15-20 people logged in also. If I ran no security I'd be seeing numbers n the 500 + range also.

Hi Spurdy thanks for your valuable input, I've changed the apache settings past week according to your input.
Earlier csf was installed on my vps but i'd to remove it cause it was causing the kernal to crash.
Now again today im seeing the server inaccessible for long time and im seeing a lot of httpd processes in top list.
After restarting the server, the result is same .. the load average is hovering around 50+

Im also noticing random high load spike from httpd processes, the load average remains at 3.0 4.0 3.5 for some time and randomly it shoots to 15.0 16.0 18.0 with lot of httpd processes in top list.

I too have a similar thought so i opened the support ticket with my host and they said

"Dear Customer,

Your httpd has been attack.
Please refer to the log.
There is a single IP 24.187.67.162 having massive connection to your port 80.
We have blocked the IP 24.187.67.162 from our router.
Your VPS load should be reduce in 15 minutes."

But after again im seeing random spike in http load and at specific intervals of time like 1:00 am / 1:20 am / 1:30 am / 1:40 am / 2:00am and so on..

Also i've a query, does raising the maxclient in apache will result in some change ?

Httpd high load issue is consistent for last couple of days, i tried disabling the whole plugin system of vbulletin and after that the load had come down to normal but again shoots up randomly.

Can this be also the possible case that my site has outgrown the vps and in need of dedicated server ?

If you've followed my post on the prior thread that I linked, these questions are answered there. I don't see where MaxClients was checked in the Apache error log to see if that was an issue nor whether you saw any IPs hitting the server for a large number of connections yourself. Rather than having your provider investigate, you have SSH access, so you would want to log into the machine and run the commands indicated in that prior thread post. It's the only way to investigate and troubleshoot the issue properly.

The load remains stable for sometime and it spikes every 10th mint of an hour.

If you have enough memory attleast 2gig on that vps alter the pache handler to fcgi
it lowers the cpu usage by both apache and mysql and also is so much more stable under dos attack
because what ever the bot net attack or high requests from one ip address is it serves plain html and compile php once
test it on fcgi and see if the problem resolves

also if you have more than one cpu use mpm_worker
also ad mem_cache

reduce memory usage so that it doesn't use as much swap and can use more of your memory for disk buffering. Accessing buffered blocks from memory is a gazillion times faster than accessing them from disk.

So how do you reduce memory usage without reducing functionality? By tuning the trade off between memory and CPU time.
