sure an importing tool doesn't have to do all the job but at least recreate all configuration then the content we can move manually from a server to another

Helm has a very commercial approach to it's functions, it has a lot of billing functions and i never used as i have my own billing system and i work with more than one single plataform

it also isolate the websites giving a single NTFS user to each one of then but also it groups websites into a couple of IIS application polls

other control panels relay their security in creating a different application pool to each site what in IIS6 took 20mb of ram memory for each application pool what can be better in IIS7 according to microsoft it can handle hundred of application pools

helm also keeps information of a default application pool to be used with asp.net 1 and another to be used with asp.net 2

it has a internal structure that really is confused and takes a lot of time to configure a single reseller or customer

first if you want a customer you need to be his reseller and your main web site will be your first customer inside of your own reseller chain where you are your own reseller.. pretty confused

then if you have for instance CUSTOMER-A you have to fill a form with all data about this customer or reseller, address, phone number, etc

So let's no suppose customer A is a reseller, inside of customerA you will see another forms with all data about the customer-A's customers, and also his hosting plans what in WHM is called packages...

well in WHM it takes 3 screens to full create a new reseller but at helm it takes over than 10 screens

what is really odd is that besides the fact that you have this hosting plans in your reseller menu at helm the customer-A's customers has also in their menu a Package section where you can place 1 or 2 or as many as hosting plans you want or even customize this hosting plans so they are all duplicated in the database, this can be done in order to add one single email extra account to it's package without having to upgrade/downgrade an account in terms of WHM, it also means that you can have let's say 3 base hosting plans but you can customize each of then in a different way to each of your customers if you need

ok so if i were going to create a migration code from helm to cpanel importation i assume that my cpanel windows machine server 2008 has

    MSDNS
    IIS7
    MSFTP (IIs6)
    PERL+AWSTATS
    MYSQL 5
    PHP 5
ASP, asp.net 1 and 2, 3, 3.5 (with 2 application or more pools prior configures to asp.net 1 and 2) i dont know if cpanel will create a application for each single site so i am considering by now only a few pools)

the IIS as it has many parameters such as parent path, host header, virtual directories, etc it can be migrated with all site settings (maybe windows 2008 resource kit has a migrating tool from IIS6 to IIS7)

but to take this data from HELM SQL database *(helm 3 as helm4 has information stored also in other places)

well this script will read all domains name and especification and recreates

    1) DNS
    2) FTP and NTFS folders
    3) IIS
    4) MYSQL DBs, USERS
    5) EMAILS

by the moment it will create the sites in WHM it could use a migration master package with 99999 of everything or it can copy the helm customersA package to each of his/her sites

as you know in helm we cannot easy determine which of the many domains of customersA is the reseller domains but it has a field named DNS MASK in the customer global account configuration menu and if it is different from blank there will be the resellers dns customersA main domain... Or in last case it can create a ficticious domain just to hold the other reseller domains and after this we manually adjust this at WHM at reseller center

well sorry for my poor english is just to give some general insight on this issue

    Thanks
    claudio

It's been over a month since the first "beta test" was completed and I dont see anything new, including no mention of the next beta test nor the forum to discuss Cpanel Windows / W2k8 issues.

Has anyone heard ANYTHING at all about ANYTHING ?

Probably cpanel is waiting for "someone" from microsoft to "help" and by help i mean to program the whole thing in asp.net what is terrible in my opinion

however windows 2008 still not available for servers as an option at the DataCenters

well hope this cpanel for windows be something real and not just an illusion (sounds like music)

    cPanel Conference 2008 Official Announcement

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the third year running the cPanel will be holding its annual conference in Houston, Texas from June 11 to 13. This year’s conference promises to be more in depth, with more advanced topics then the previous years. There will be guest speakers, in addition to cPanel developers cPanel techs will be on hand to provide live, in person technical support. Also taking place will also be a panel discussion with some cPanel’s developers and techs. With the upcoming release of cPanel Server Suite for Windows scheduled for April, the conference will have several sessions geared towards the new product and how it will significantly enhance Windows based hosting operations.

Conference registration is once again very reasonable at $60.00 USD per attendee. Attendees will be able to meet vendors and producers of software plugins that work with cPanel as well as service providers that deploy cPanel. As the host of the conference, cPanel will be providing a cocktail reception with a top shelf open bar on the evening of the 11th as well as a sumptuous dinner for all attendees and vendors on the 12th. Lunch and breakfast will also be provided both days.

For more information, please visit the conference site located at http://conference.cpanel.net/

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well i can see that the release will be on April but will it be released without any beta test ?

nobody said up to this time "Yes i tested cpanel for windows"

Ha, it will be released IN BETA, as per the most recent change to the product announcement page:

    http://www.cpanel.net/products/cpss/index.html

cPanel, the leading Web hosting control panel software provider, will release its first Microsoft Windows Server® 2008-based product line in beta later this year.

It recently said it was releasing this spring, now its going to be releasing AS A BETA later this year. Got to say its very disappointing to keep seeing this pushed further and further back.

ASP.NET works great with mod_mono. Try installing it through EasyApache

Lots of scripts have to be tweaked to run under "apache" ASP.

The worst part is when you get a big client and just as they get rolling they want a DLL or something like ASPmail or some windows binary or whatever else that will only run under W2k/W2k3. You got to tell them its really just a unix box emulating ASP.NET and they end up leaving.

    By default mod_mono only supports ASP.NET v1.1

Support for ASP.NET v2.0 is incomplete, but may be enabled with a configuration change.

    Support for v3+ is non-existent

Support for VB.NET is not provided by default, not even with our installer. One has to download it as a separate tarball, compile, make and make install.

The Mono project's stated goal is to have complete support for v2.0 and (I believe) integrated support for VB.NET sometime this year.

Microsoft is already on v3.5 of .NET.

Not to be pushy, but I'm very interested in running cPanel on Windows 2008. I've got my hoster even curious about it himself, as he runs Linux cPanel. We've basically got a server running IIS7 and are killing to get a good panel running. We've tried DotNetPanel and aren't fully sold on using it, and we want to stay away from Plesk and SWSoft, seeing as how they got a bad reputation lately. We're really curious how cPanel runs and want to give it a try, but there is still nothing out.

It'd be great if you could post any more information on cPanel Server System, and how things are going. We'd be more than happy to beta test it for you, as well.

    Hope to hear an update.

I agree with this statement. For a lot of clients, Windows will be the only OS on their servers, so it would be great if PHP, MySQL, PERL, etc are also supported. And in fact, to make it easier / better for everyone, these should maybe be "cPanel Addons" - like the ASP & Tomcat Addons, then you can choose if you want to install it or not.

David, what kind of clustering will it support? Will it just be DNS as on the Linux version, or will it offer & support true DNS, file, email, DB & failover clustering?

Does anyone have an updated status on how the testings is going? When we can see a public release?

Well, everyone has their own definition of clustering. cPanel Server Suite could likely fit under the distributed services description.

    For example:

While you can run IIS, AD, Mail, etc all on one machine, it's likely not a great idea. Since we're using Active Directory, you'll create an Active Directory domain and add servers to it. This way you can add say 1 cPanel interface server that interacts with an AD server, 1 DNS server, 2 mail servers, 3 IIS servers, a MySQL (and MS SQL 2008 in the future) server, etc.

If your clients accessing the cPanel interface server is causing a lot of load, simply add another one to the domain and provide new clients with the address of the new server so you can balance your load.

Failover is not specifically addressed in the panel itself as there are many other technologies that address failover including Microsoft's Failover Clustering.
