Default cpanel support windows 2008 announced by Microsoft

Today Microsoft announced that cPanel, the leading Web hosting control panel software provider, will release its first Windows Server 2008-based product line in beta later this year. Traditionally a Linux- and FreeBSD-based supplier of hosting automation tools, cPanel is collaborating with Microsoft to provide its customers with a greater choice in platform selection with IIS7.

“Microsoft has shown a strong commitment to the hosting industry over the past several years” said J. Nick Koston, CEO of cPanel. “cPanel’s Windows development team feels that IIS7 offers a robust, high-performance Web server with increased security that the industry will quickly adopt. Microsoft Server 2008 and IIS7 with its modern architecture and support for legacy products was the natural starting point for our expanded product offering.”

If its better than HELM I will be first in line to convert my W2k3 boxes to W2k8 and Cpanel.

Sorry folks, but I don't understand this.

Cpanel is going the way plesk have gone... and see where they are now...

I think it is very hard to maintain both windows and linux versions without affecting (badly) the linux development. I'm pretty scared because all the efforts may be put on windows new and shiny release...

No wonder they're not making any deadlines.

    Go figure.

Well Microsoft is slowly gaining market share and alot of their new stuff will only work on Windows (goodbye frontpage on unix) so I think its a good idea for Cpanel to at least try to compete. Now that W2k8 is coming out that would be a perfect place for Cpanel to get started.

I think cpanel for unix is quite mature and whats going on right now with the CP11 rewrite is going to make future updates easier. So once thats all done, well in advance of W2k8, the cpanel team will have more free time and people to work on new things.

That is something we have considered and since I don't want to cross the line into inadvertently saying something I may not be authorized to say publicly - all I'll say is we've taken measures to ensure the Linux/FreeBSD development and Windows development in no way adversely impact one another.

cPanel and cPanel Server Suite (TM) for Microsoft Windows Server® will be two separate (and compatible) products, not a single cross-platform product.

    Subscribed.

    Some questions:

-Exchange support? This would be killer as we would migrate off DNP.
    -Office communication server support?
    -Sharepoint support?
    -MSSQL?
-Any ideas on the licensing cost for just cPanel - as we are already an SPLA partner...
-What APIs will you make available? Will you encourage 3rd-party development?
-Integration with the Linux version of cPanel?

    Kind Regards,

    Kind Regards,
Traditionally, I'd ask you to email me at sales@cpanel.net; however given the frequency at which your questions are asked, it is worth posting a response to the forums.

While cPanel Server Suite (TM) for Microsoft Windows Server® is still being developed, it would be hard to give definite answers to these questions. However, I will say we will have MS SQL support. Additionally since cPanel for Microsoft Windows Server® will have full clustering support (unlike cPanel/WHM), we're currently working out the details regarding how the product will be licensed. It will likely not be licensed in the same way as cPanel/WHM.

I know the cPanel Server Suite (TM) for Microsoft Windows Server® team has considered Exchange support; however, that will not make the 1.0 release. A future version of Exchange may be supported, and we definitely hear the demand for Exchange support.

As for the remainder of your questions, I do not have those answers at this time. I'm sure as the product prepares for beta late this year that I'll have answers for you at that time. However, I will say that third party development is a concern for the cPanel Server Suite (TM) for Microsoft Windows Server® team.

It is important to note that this isn't cPanel forced onto a Microsoft Windows Server® platform. It has been built with an independent code base with Microsoft technologies. While the products will look and feel the same, under the hood they are completely different.

Actually Linux was never that secure, there have been several kernal-specific exploits and countless applications with holes/exploits since linux first came out. I don't think hackers are really attacking cpanel, its more likely they found an opening somewhere else and then get root access to use cpanel.

This is great news from cPanel and Windows to be working together!

I hope to test and used that product at 100% for sure!
