Default Align weekly and monthly backups to specific day of week and specific day of month

I took several of the backup suggestions and thought of the best way to meet their intent. Here are my suggestions to make backup very desirable.

Align weekly backups to occur on Sunday instead of one week intervals from the time you first configured backup.

Align monthly backups to occur on the first day of every month instead of being the fourth weekly backup.

    Thanks!

it does make more sense for the weekly backup to be on the correct day of the week - namely Sunday.

It does seem silly that it uses the day you turn the back on as the day to do the weekly backup.

allowing us to choose the days for the weekly and monthly would be nice too.

I'd like to see the weekly backups run on a Sunday (or Saturday), or alternatively have the ability to choose the day of the week that they run.

I start my backups a few minutes after midnight and I find that because the weekly/monthly backups take longer than the daily backups they sometimes don't complete until a few hours into the business day.

So it would be ideal if I could move the weekly backups to the weekend.

(I don't want to start the backups earlier because I know there are developers working on our customers sites in the evenings)

Default Is this what you want us to implement?

Attached is a screenshot from the Enkompass interface, a product where we do already implement this functionality. Is this what you are looking for us to implement into cPanel/WHM for *nix?

David, now that looks like a perfect implementation.
I don't know why this haven't been changed for so long. Running the weekly/monthly backups a week/month since you enable backups, is plain... simple

    Yes that would be desirable.

I would make the following suggestions.

    1. Under the weekly backup section, provide an option "Prevent Daily Backup From Being Performed On Day of Weekly Backup".
    2. Provide the same thing thing for monthly "Prevent Daily Backup From Being Performed On Day of Monthly Backup".
    3. Then provide an additional option for monthly that says "Offset Monthly Backup by 1 day if Monthly Backup Occurs on day of Weekly Backup".
    4. Allow a time to be specified for each section.

    Thanks!
    Frank

What do you mean by "Offset Monthly Backup by 1 day?"

Do these need to be separate times or can this one time apply to all (daily/weekly/monthly) as it does now when the Cron Config functionality is enabled in WHM?

I take it for most people here, these two particular items are not considered critical parts of this feature request?

I'm not sure I understand his request. He wants (for example) daily backups to run on tues, weekly on fri, monthly on sat but not if weekly backup is running on that day, which is wouldn't be, it was set to fri?

I guess I have kind of confused the matter. Let me try again.

Go with the picture of Encompass. Allow the user to decide if he does not want a daily backup on the day a weekly backup is to be performed. Then provide an option to allow the user to decide if he does not want a daily or weekly backup on the day a monthly backup is to occur.

    Forget the offset stuff.

Please ensure the below report accurately and completely reflects the functionality you desire. If I do not hear anything within 2 weeks, it will be submitted to our development team as-is.

    CALL FOR COMMENTS

Many feel that running a weekly backup on the same day as a monthly backup is excessively redundant. Not only is running the backup process very resource intensive, the current system does not accommodate (via the GUI) the ability to set a day of the week for backups.

This means a good system administrator that would like to change the day and time of the week when weekly backups occur to match times where their servers typically have the lowest load cannot currently do this. They are currently forced to pursue sub-optimal solutions including hoping that backups do not overload their server and disabling these weekly or monthly backups entirely.

Time of backups can currently be customized using a feature buried within an optional plugin that must be installed via the Manage Plugins page. This ability to customize the time of day when backups occur should become native functionality instead and easier to locate in the WHM interface, such as placing it directly on the Configure Backups screen.

This feature request is largely inspired by the existing functionality in Enkompass shown below:

The pictures look good. As long as the software keeps from doing a backup more than once in one day I am happy to accommodate Weekly and Monthly snapshots.
