[Case 46222] Mailman updating private archives but not public ones after a reinstall

Due to a whole bunch of things deciding to fall over a couple days ago, I had to reinstall the CPanel server from the ground up. That meant the usual, backing up, wipe the drive, install the OS, rebuild CPanel, restore the backup. It's after restoring the backup that I'm noticing strange behaviours. On one of the mailing lists I maintain, the public archives haven't been updated since the night of the 16th (presumedly, when I imported the list). However, the archives in /private have been updated as of 4:00 this morning. I can wipe and manually rebuild the archives, and only the ones in /private are getting updated. I've checked, and the list is set to public archives. What am I not doing right? FYI, this is CPanel 11.30.2.1 and latest provided mailman.

I found part of the problem. Looks like during the restore, CPanel decided to duplicate both the public and private archives folder. I know that's not how it's supposed to be, and confirmed by creating a test list (that one works, by the way). /usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/mailman/archives/public/test_domain.com simlinks to ../private/test_domain.com, which has permissions of 2775. That, according to CPanel, is correct--that's how it created it, anyway. So I blew away the public folder of the problem list, simlinked that folder as my test list has had done, matched permissions, and gave that a shot. Now, I'm staring at a 403 error in Apache. I've varified configuration settings, run /scripts/fixmailman, hasn't resolved the problem. Can anyone offer a suggestion or two? That would be greatly appreciated.

Could you provide the output when visiting the list in /usr/local/apache/logs/error_log location as well as /usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/mailman/logs/error location?

I just got back to this after dealing with some personal issues. The mailman error log doesn't give me any output when I visit the archive page. Apache's error log, however, gives lines similar to this (note: this is a Google hit, but me doing it myself produces the same error).

Is there a reason that this is set to nobody:mailman:

All the others are set to mailman:mailman for the ownership.

Mailman set it that way when I disabled and then reenabled the archives. It will be fixed, but that doesn't solve my issue. With the exception of test_the-jdh.com, all of the lists were reimported after an OS reinstall and their archives aren't updating. This one is the only one returning a 403 error, however--others, for example gamers_usagamesinteractive.com, just show a very old, not updated version of the archives. Private archives, however (those accessed using /private), behave as they're supposed to.

The public archives aren't updating because they should be symlinked with the proper permissions to the private archives. Can you please try changing the ownership permissions as suggested to see if that fixes the error? If it does, simply recreate the necessary symlinks with the right file and ownership permissions.

After that, if you believe this happens to be a bug, please submit a bug report at http://go.cpanel.net/bugs or using the Bugs link at the top of the forum.

If fixing the wrong ownership permissions on the symlink does not work for that one list, please let us know here.

Okay, that seems to have been fixed. That is indeed a bug--I'll have it reported accordingly. Now, to go do that to the rest of the lists that were reimported post-reinstall. Thank you.

As I've noted on the ticket, it appears we have a bug report already internally opened (46222) regarding this issue. I've flagged that ticket to the case. If you end up needing an update besides asking via the ticket, you would be able to check our changelog at Change Logs for when that case has been pushed into a set version.

Hello guys, I'm not sure if this is the same issue *, but today I had t restore the backup of an account with a mailman list. After restoring one were able to open the mailman webpage from the cpanel screen, but the mailman webpage warned that that lista doesn't exist in the server. And this is a bug in the way cPanel restore mailman lists...
I made a lookup via ssh for the files and folders of that list and they were in the correct location. The problem was the permissions assigned by cPanel. I didn't take exact note of the errors I found, but comparing with other functional mailing list hosted in the same server, I've seen that there were folders with permission 0700 when it should be 2775, and folders or files with owner root when it should be mailman.
(The version of cPanel is STABLE 11.30.4.6)

Hello Kent,

Yes, what you are reporting would be case 52517 that was fixed in 11.31.0.21 and higher. Since this version has not reached STABLE, you would be able to either manually fix the issue or update to a tier that is using a version above that one. Currently, only EDGE is on 11.31 (version 11.31.2.10). Since EDGE is a non-production tier, I wouldn't really suggest updating to it but to wait for STABLE or CURRENT to reach versions above 11.31.0.21
