amin account directories disappearing

Hello - I have a strange occurance on my server.

My main account's (not root/admin) home directory and everything in it just up and disappeared on me - and I hadn't been messing with it.

This alarms me on a few levels and drives hme the fact that I most likely need to seriously focus on security.

Where do I start? lol.

I'm not even sure a good place to sit down and read and learn the basics of how people compromise your server - or how to regain control back if you then discover that they *have* or how to FIND the hole they snuck in through so I can plug it up.

Could someone please help me with any advice or pointing me in the right direction?

Thanks for the links - I found the rootkit one, I'll have to looks at the others.

What could be the possible causes for a home directory to vanish outside of an attack or malicious cause?

Don't know for sure although recently with all of the updates and suexec issues in cPanel strange things have been happening
Searching the forum might yield some info for you.
