Can i have domain in one server and subdomain in other?

Hello,
I'd like to know if it's possible to have one domain in one server, and the subdomain in another server, each one with diferent cpanels.

What i want to do is:
I have one domain in a web hosting, i have created the subdomain there. but now i want that subdomain to work in another bigger server to create ftp acounts for diferent users. So i thought that the subdomain in another server where i have more space was the best option, now i need to be able to create ftp acounts in the 2nd server.

My webhosting provider for the main domain (where i also created the subdomain) told me that subdomains don't have DNS, it means i can't have the subdomain working in the 2nd server?

We do it over here all the time. Your webhosting provider may not allow it though
