Default Couldn't get handle: Permission denied

I am trying to login to my server via SFTP, but whenever i try to get to a certain directory, i get "Couldn't get handle: Permission denied"

When i tried to change the permissions, I got the same error "Couldn't get handle: Permission denied"

    How can i get in?

    I'm not sure --
I can access it via SFTP, and can get into the root folder. but then when i try to get to the folders i need to change, i don't have permission.

I can access the front end Web Host Manager.---

    Question

How are you connecting with SFTP, as in what application/client are you using? That might be the problem.

Is this a reseller account or do you have root access, as in are you using an account name to login via SFTP or using the login name, root?

ah that's it! I was logging in as the main user instead of as "root"

    I can change files now.

Thanks for all the help! This server sort of fell on my lap, so it's been a a bit of a struggle figuring it all out!
