cpanel/whm optimize website issue

I have a vps im still new to linux/ and hole whm thing.
I compiled apache with mod_deflate enabled. Atm im running apache 2.2 and php 5.2.9. My issue is I have 3 sites running on the server and when I log into cpanel on any of the accounts and go to software/services/optimize website and try to select, Compress the specified MIME types, or Compress all content eather is doesnt matter, as it wont enable anything and when it click go back if still setting on disabled. I checked the htaccess files for all 3 accounts and it didnt write anything to them. I fill kinda clueless here and would like this enable cause few of the site have quite a bit of content.

My cpanel version is cPanel 11.24.4-C37008 - WHM 11.24.2 - X 3.9.
If anybody might have an idea what I set up wrong would be great.

Run
tail -f /usr/local/cpanel/logs/error_log

when you enable the setting and see if you get an error as to why it is not doing anything.
