Ubuntu is not a supported OS: Quick Start Installation Guide I believe that cPanel only works on RPM based Linux systems.

I have actually gotten Cpanel to work with Ubuntu but not before some very serious code modifications and re-writes that only a few other than myself in this forum would be capable of doing and definitely not worth the headache or the time involved doing.

My best recommendation to you would be exactly what cpaneldavidl told you and that is to go with CentOS as that is by and far the most stable platform and least problematic of all the supported OS choices.
