Well, if you want a specific example, I'm looking for information about wwwacct.conf

The reason I'm looking for information about that is that I recently signed up with a host provider who, in the welcome e-mail, told me I needed to "create a user" in WHM in order to access cpanel. There's no "create user" option in WHM so I chose ""create account" which seemed the nearest thing. I thought it would be a gui front-end to adduser. I was more than a little surprised when it proceeded to set up an entire web environment, making dns and apache modifications in the process.

So I came here, only to find the documentation is little more than an annotated list of the various clickable items in the interface. There's no overview, no "This is what WHM is; this is what Cpanel is; this is how they interact". I wanted to have the sites created in somewhere other than /home; after searching around it seems I can do that by modifying wwwacct.config. So I've done that. But I've no idea whether or not that is supported. And I've no idea how many other config files are lying around that may, or may not be useful. A search for wwwacct.conf in the documentaton returns zero hits. A search for the same thing in the forums returns 221.

The whole thing needs a good, solid user guide, written by a technical author.

cPanel and WHM is designed for commercial web hosting. Therefore, when you create a cPanel account, you are creating a new hosting account. All of the configuration (including DNS) is automatically handled by WHM when an account is created.

If you want to change the default directory into which new accounts are provisioned, just go to your WHM interface, click on Basic cPanel/WHM setup and for Default Home Directory change the value to what you desire.

Thanks for your reply. As you point out, the video and the features page do provide an overview. I think the reason that I missed them was that I found my way via google, which took me directly to the documentation wiki, where there is no overview.

I still feel that the documentation lacks sufficient technical depth. wwwacct.conf is clearly an important file and there are numerous other similar files and scripts included in the installation. I feel that they should be documented; the fact that the product is designed primarily as point-and-click notwithstanding.

We just launched our new website and documentation last week so the search engines are still slowly catching up with re-indexing everything. Therefore, feel welcome to direct any questions my way so I can safe you the time searching.

I'll bring your suggestion about wwwacct.conf and other configuration files to the attention of our documentation team. We are still in the process of completing much of the new documentation (especially our more technical documentation) for our software so I don't have any possible ETA at this time.
