How to install an application like Gallery?

This is a very basic question so forgive my ignorance. I am leasing a dedicated server through Hostrocket, complete with WHM and CPANEL. I use it as a webserver, and have for a couple of years, and all is fine.

But if I now want to install an application like Gallery 2, do I go to Apache with the terminal program on CPANEL (the SSH/Shell Access icon) and install it like that, or is CPANEL or WHM used in more of a sandbox type way to install a new application?

if it's one of the fantastico packages, then go in and install it via fantastico through the client mode control panel.

if it's just a piece of software, (a php gallery or something), then put it in the web root you want it in, and most of them have install instructions.

if you're new to it all and just need something that'll work... you're better off going with one of the fantastico options.
