IP Banning

I am sorry to ask this again, I did use the search feature and read several topics on this, however they were all conflicting and showed different range numbers than what I was told by my old hosting company.
The question is I have had several attacks with who knows what human or programs attempt to hack the sever I have.
I am using the ConfigServer Security & Firewall feature of my server and if I want to ban IP's will this work.
Example
1.1.0.0/16 "Will this ban the entire 1.1.255.255 range?"
1.1.1.0/24 "Will this ban the entire 1.1.1.255 range?"

This site has a tool for calculating the CIDR ranges:

Ip Tools, DNS tools, internet tools, WHOIS, traceroute, ping, domain name tools

Its on the left side, here is an example link:

http://iptools.com/dnstools.php?tool...r_data=1.1.0.0

So, this shows that if you ban 1.1.0.0/16, it will ban:

1.1.0.0 => 1.1.255.255 (65536 IP addresses)

Incidentally, if you see an address that you want to ban the entire CIDR range,
you can lookup the registration of that IP address and it will show you right
there on the spot the entire CIDR block owned by that registrant which
would be coming from the same network.

(Run the IP address there)

If it is not North America, it'll direct you to RIPE.NET, AFNIC.ORG, or APNIC.ORG
and you can subsequently run the same searches from there for more
detailed information about the overseas registration.

Once you have the correct CIDR in hand, it's a simple matter to block it.
