Default The look of the cpanel user control panel for a hosting account on unix platform.

    Hello,

sometime ago when i wanted to host my website and i approached a reselling webhosting company in nigeria, the person in charge at the company advised me that a hosting account on unix platform is more durable and thus more advisable than one on linux platform; but that an account on unix operating system would cost me a little more. so being a novice i decided to pay more for a more durable service and since then i have viewed linux server as a substandard and thus not-so-good a server to host a site on: this was actually the impression the guy at the host company gave to me.

but lately as i got to know the web environment better i got to know that most hosting companies offer linux accounts with pride and infact most of them would offer u just linux and windows accounts and i havent found a company offering unix except that first company i met then. so i began to wonder to myself if indeed linux is not that good.

so i decided to host some other sites on linux server, and a las, everything worked just like my unix accounts and then very surprisingly, the cpanel environment looked everything like the unix environment. there was nothing different. and when the other guy sold me the unix account the cpanel would tell me that my operating system was linux. i would complain to the guy but he would tell me that operating system is quite different from platform, and that he put me on unix platform. i would ask him, but i didnt see unix identified anywhere on cpanel control panel.

so i want to ask, does the cpanel control panel for linux accounts differ from those of unix accounts? pls tell me if you know? maybe i have cheated all these days, maybe the guy sold to me linux accounts at the price of unix accounts.

At this time, cPanel/WHM is only designed to work on the Linux and Unix (BSD) distributions listed at:

    System Requirements - cPanel Inc.

Sometimes, to get cPanel/WHM to work on an OS we do not currently support, the system administrator will make the server appear to be an OS that we do support so our software will function well. As a result, we cannot provide a definitive answer regarding if you are on Unix vs. Linux. This question is best addressed by someone with significant access to the server (e.g. someone with root or sudo access).

Hello Sir, pls sorry about the above quoted incoherences, i had meant that i complained to the guy that my cpanel was telling me i was on linux operating system while he was telling me he hosted me on unix and he would tell me he put me on unix platform and not operating system; and the terminologies would throw me off.

also i had meant that 'maybe i have been cheated' and not 'maybe i cheated'

as regards to your response, i can understand that you can't be able to tell exactly which server type i am on, but i have decided to switch my hosting package back to linux. i have understood that linux is quite good and there is no reason for me to pay any extra money to be on unix, after all i am running a small business. i shall switch myself and all my clients to linux hosting because that guy has cheated us of our money enough.

thanks a lot, Sir, for taking time to give me an answer. God Bless you indeed.

Default but do they need to fake as such

but sir, since you accept unix servers, i dont think someone would want to fake as if he is on linux server whereas he is on unix. the hosting account i bought tells me my operating system is linux on my cpanel board, so do you think the operating system would be unix and these guys are faking as if they are on linux, judging by the fact that cpanel accepts unix servers, why would they need to fake as such.

instead, from the little i have read about unix, it's someone on linux that would rather fake as if he is on unix operating system.

    what do u think sir?

i shall invite the hosting company i am talking about to clear the air right on this blog thread, i shall send this thread to them as soon as i post this reply.

What is the point of PM'ing others for a thread like this?

Anyways short answer - why host with somebody you cannot trust? Linux is often called unix like but not unix itslef *shrug*
