Mail server problems

Hi,

I just got a new dedicated server from UK2.net with WHM and cpanel installed. I register my domains with 1and1. UK2 do not supply name servers for easy pointing. So I have sucessfully pointed the domain to the server with the ip address. However I can not seem to setup the mail servers.

I have setup a new subdomain in 1and1 (mail.mydomain.co.uk) then pointed this to the same ip address as above and my server, then used the subdomain (mail.mydomain.co.uk) as the first mx record.

The problem is that I am unable to send or recieve mail through the server as something is not configured properly. I am also unable to access the webmail through cpanel via /webmail or :2085.

Do I need to setup something in WHM or Cpanel to get the mail working? O rwhat settings to I need to change?

I am new to server stuff and could do with some help!!

To alleviate the symptoms there may be multiple steps involved; it is difficult to diagnose without knowing your specific domains and how the server is configured. I would check the following as a start:

1.) Verify your DNS resolvers function; here is related documentation:

2.) Ensure that there is a minimum of two different IP addresses registered as DNS/name servers at your domain registrar; the IP addresses would be those assigned to your dedicated server.

3.) Verify that the cPanel/WHM configuration knows the registered DNS/name servers to use when creating new accounts and domains. These may be defined or changed via WHM on the Basic cPanel/WHM Setup page, as detailed in the following documentation:

4.) Verify that the primary server IP address has a valid PTR ("reverse DNS") record that matches the server hostname. Usually the upstream data center or server vendor controls this and can check and set it or they might offer an area to login to for defining and updating PTR records.

5.) After ensuring there are two DNS/name servers registered at the domain registrar, the domain names hosted on the server may also need to be switched (at the domain registrar) to use the new DNS/name servers.

Hi,

Yes all of these work except webmail.

The domain is alloywheelsshop.co.uk the ip address is 83.170.117.84

I have setup the domain directly from 1and1.co.uk using the ip address as I do not have a name server registered. Is it better to register a name server and do it that way? If so perhaps you could advise me where or how I can do such a thing. I would be happy to supply a username and password if it helps too!
