Noob question
Hello guys, just to start off by saying i am new to this just bought hosting, currently using cpanel, and took the tutorials but seemed to not be that helpful based on the fact that they are stating the obvious, but for some reason i cannot figure this out, which brings me to my question, How / where do i put my.html file that i want to be viewed as the actual page on the net? i put the file in public_html thinking this would be so but no luck, please advise any information would be helpful to a noob like myself.
-Thanks |

Assuming your hosting provider is indeed running Cpanel on their servers
where you have your hosting account, then YES all your HTML web files, scripts, and pictures, and other web content meant to be viewable on the world wide web go into the "public_html" folder in your hosting account. If you cannot see your files, you are probably suffering from one of the following conditions: 1. Your domain name is not yet pointing to your hosting account. It may take up to 3 days after you update your domain at your registrar before the routing is updated enough to see your new hosting account with your domain name. 2. You are viewing old cache in your web browser. (Always clear your browser cache and reload your browser after uploading new web files or web content else you might be thinking nothing is uploaded when it's working perfectly) 3. You are trying to view the wrong web address. You wouldn't believe how many people try to connect to http://domain.com/public_html/ instead of http://domain.com/ with their web browsers!

Make sure that you have named the file as index.html and NOT anythingelse.html

their file anything other than the typical default filenames then they'll still see the filename show up on screen but would have to click on the filename with their mouse before it would open. (Since the user has not said anything about seeing their uploaded files in the web index already, I would assume this is not the problem for the user) However for reference, any of the following generally work as default index pages when uploaded under /public_html: Code:
index.html index.htm index.php3 index.php4 default.html default.htm index.cgi index.php

You should be careful when you upload files to name them all lowercase which is the typical standard in a unix environment carried forward into the rest of the internet. Windows machines see no difference between case when naming files but web servers will see different case as different files.

my file is saved as index.html lower case, i always use lower case due to the fact that it is recommended for xhtml so its a habit, my main problem i think is that i have indexing turned on which you stated earlier in the post, that is done automatically from cpanel, turning it off would most likely help me. but i dont know the steps to take, thanks for the input guys!!!!! its helping me gain a better understanding of cpanel.

If you PM your web address URL, I can take a look and probably tell you
pretty quick what's going on or what you are or aren't doing in a heartbeat instead of taking guesses based on what you describe in your posts.
