Outgoing Spam and phpmailer

I am in the process of migrating over from rackspace.com where I had a server that some spammer compromised through one of my scripts. I believe I was finally able to track down the compromised script and delted it.

On my new server with hostgator.com, I want to avoid this problem.

The first issue I ran into was whether phpmailer less secure or more secure than mail()? Does anyone know?

Also, any recommendations to avoid outgoing spam would be appreciated

How about using the services of ConfigServer?

i used servertune.com and i've never been happier. had many problems, high load, spam and stuff, but not any more.
