My server is on PHP5.1.4 and I am behind one upgrade (5.1.6 is now available). So PHP5 is a possibility. I am assuming that you are a hosted customer and do not have WHM access to the server. If this is a correct assumption and your provider will not upgrade to PHP5, then you are left with only one choice - change hosts. If you do have WHM access then adding PHP5 is pretty simple. I would first upgrade to at least the Release tree. Then you simply run Software->Apache Update and choose the appropriate options.

We so far have had no problems. I just finished the upgrade to php 5.1.6 and all is well. You can always run the Apache Upgrade and if you have too many problems, just "roll back" to an older version of php. I cannot guarantee that what works on my server will work on yours. You can never get too broken as the Apache Upgrade has an option to "Reset Apache Config to Default (last resort)" and that has saved me when I have gotten too fancy.

The only problem we ran into so far, is that Modernbill doesn't work with PHP 5.1.x - so for now we have to stay with PHP 5.0.5. Other than that, you can most defenately upgrade to PHP 5. Quite a few pieces of software these days won't work on PHP4 anymore

WRONG! We've been using PHP 5 exclusively with Cpanel for almost 2 years now and have
not had any problems with PHP 5 whatsoever.

Upgrading your PHP by Cpanel's EasyApache program works just fine and you can go up
to PHP 5 doing that if you like so your host is completely wrong about that.

I personally like to upgrade manually myself just to give me a lot more control and flexibility
over the upgrade but that's just my own personal preference. I have also upgraded hundred
of machines using strictly cpanel's programs only and those worked just fine as well.

I think your provider representative who told you not to use PHP 5 is apparently an incompetent idiot
because there is virtually no software out there now that doesn't run under PHP 5 just fine. While
many things have changed and have been added to PHP in PHP 5, it is still fully backwards compatible
to PHP 4 and accepts code written specifically for PHP 4 without any updates or changes even though the
PHP 5 way of doing things might be totally different. PHP 5 accepts both kinds of code.

If I got paid for every single time someone said "such and such doesn't work with PHP5" and I turned
around and got it working perfectly in 5 seconds much to their embarrassment, I'd be a billionaire by now.

The point I am making here is that your provider is wrong and everything works just fine with PHP 5.

Where there is some confusion is with that of MySQL 5. Unlike PHP 5, the latest version of MySQL does
actually have compatibility problems with a lot of scripts and programs out there and for that reason I
don't recommend anyone upgrade to MySQL 5 at the present time.

However, I don't see any problems at all upgrading to PHP5 and you should probably go do that!

To Sofdux, you are wrong about Modernbill. It works perfectly with 5.1.6 and we have now have
clients running it under 5.2.0 as well without any problems.
