Some assistance please

Hello There,

I am currently stumped on how to fix an error I am receiving on my server. The MySQL seems as it is turned off, but I have restarted it multiple times and receive the same error every time.

/usr/local/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists! mysql has failed, please contact the sysadmin (result was "Warning, no valid mysql.sock file found.mysql has failed").

Now I need this fixed asap, I have root access.. so can someone help me fix this problem please

Execute:

pico -w /etc/my.cnf

Find:

basedir=/var/lib

Replace with:

#basedir=/var/lib

Execute:

service mysql restart

If that doesn't work post the contents of your /etc/my.cnf file

Login to SSH... I'd use PuTTy...

I dont want to mess the server up... if I do something wrong, it might ruin the server more

Although cPanel can essentially be run through the GUI, learning simple command line instructions and editing through SSH is, to me, essential.

A good users guide to Linux-based command line can be found at:

Chapters 4 and 6 should give you a lot of the info you'll need. As Nhojohl says, get Putty.

Otherwise, you'll need someone that can edit files and has root access.
