Unhappy Unable To open Raw Access Files

I apologize if this is a repost, but I'm unable to find an answer to my question. I am able to download the raw access log files to my computer in the .gz format, but I am unable to unzip or read these files. Is there a program that I should be using? I have tried Ultimate Zip, WinZip, GZip, and 7Zip. But so far I haven't had any luck.

Once I do finally get it unzipped, will I need any special software to read these logs? Is there a simple way to go about this? I've read several posts and answers here about Raw Access Logs but I am still in the dark. Please consider that I am an absolute newbie at this whole server thing. Try to keep the cookies on the lower shelf please... LOL
Thank you in advance for whatever help you can offer.

if you're a newbie, why don't you use infrmation provided by webalizer/awstats?

those raw logs have only one purpose. to be passed through a better log-analyzer. (there are many professional log-analyzers out there, but they cost money.)

the raw logs are gzipped. i don;'t know if you can open them with winzip(but i think it should work). If not, try WinRAR, that can open them for sure (www.rarlabs.com)
after you open them, there shuld be a tar archive inside, that you can also open with winrar.

then it's the log. it's a text file, and it won't do you any good reading it

I'm having the same problem. I think it's a bug:

Just do a search back through the forum for "raw log". We are not the only ones.

Default How To View .gz Raw Access Files

I too had the same problems as the rest of you. I was unable to open or extract my Raw Log .gz Files, then I stumbled on a way to do it.

Step 1: Go to your cPanel.

Step 2: Go to File Manager

Step 3: You should have an option of selecting one of four directories. Choose the "Document Root for" (for your particular website) Note: At the time I did this I also had "Show hidden files selected" Click OK.

Step 4: A web page should open. Look to your left where you should see "public_html/logs"

    Step 5: Click on "logs"

Step 6: You should see a list of your Access Log Files. Select one of your files.

Step 7: At the top of your menu bar you should see "Extract". Click it.

Step 8: The icon associated with your file should change to a different icon. At the top of your menu bar, go select "View". Presto!

Hopefully this works for the rest of you. It did for me.

    Regards,

    That's brilliant CoronaRay - thank-you!

Once you have viewed the file, you can copy, then paste into an excel spreadsheet.

I was having problems with the monthly archive, not the daily raw access logs, which I could download ok.

I found opening the text file in notepad++ was much easier than just notepad - from notepad ++ you can then put it into an excel file, and do searches etc.
