Using and Running WHM/CPanel on CentOS?

I have and also have had many managed servers.

However, I just got my first “Self Managed” server and I need some info.
I will be using this sever to learn how to manage a server and use WHM better.

The server has CentOS 4.x and Cpanel/WHM.

When it comes to Self Managed what all should I be managing?
What should I be updating, checking, monitoring, etc.?

I really want to learn how to manage a server so please don’t suggest that I hire someone to do it for me as this was the reason why I bought this server but would appreciate your “heads up” for my learning process.

You should me managing various things with the main being:

1. Server Security
2. Component Versions.

Use the search feature and/or look for the sticky threads in each forum area.

Please make use of the search function and have a read through some threads. Pretty much everything you want to know has been already answered 99% of the time.

dg I guess we should quit assuming that these people can read. In the time he took to write the post complaining he could have used the search and had the answer.

Sorry for the rant but it seems lately like more and more people want it handed to them on a silver platter and bitch whine and complain when someone asks them to do a little work for themselves.

I do not mind helping anyone if they have a problem but I do expect and demand that they do some research for themselves first and try to fix it so at least when they are given the help they will have a basic understanding of how the system works

I agree, everyone is not on the same level. For example I have a learning disorder so you make a good point although I'm sure you were being sarcastic.

The help you are speaking of that you offer is intermediate (info required beforehand) help as I was asking something basic so the point you made is useless. I wasn’t asking for your intermediate help nor the advance help of the gods of this site but just for a link.

But thanks anyways, I need to think of a way to stuck-up and agree with admins and mods like other jokers on this site.

My post was not directed solely at you. We have so many that want a silver bullet fix and refuse to do any work on their own due to the fact they are just flat out lazy that we sometimes overreact when the need for basic help is genuine.

God bless you for trying to do this with a disability that affects your keyboard skills. Server admin is tough enough to do without the disabilities I can only imagine how rough it would be with one.

I cannot agree more with searching for your own answer. I don't know how many times I went searching for an answer and stumbled across answers to other questions or learned different ways because of all the results. If someone just told me where to look I never would have learned about the other things I found along the way.

If you're serious about putting the time in to learn, one thing that I've found very helpful is the View New Posts link at the top-right. I visit a couple forums 2 or 3 times a day each and skim through the new posts' headings. If something catches my eye, I'll read the thread. If thread catches my interest, I'll subscribe to it.

I've not only learned tons of info this way, I've also been kept aware of wide-spread sorts of issues before they've become a problem for me. I've even slowly gained the confidence to try a few answers myself. One more thing, you get to eventually know a lot of regular contributors who have earned my respect

I will only reply once and not take part in a possible further discusion in this thread. Of course I believe that all these 'old school' people and moderators are wise and smart people but why all these attacks and unnecessary fuss made around a question for help bij Bridge. She or he is right: why searching an answer the hard way if there is a forum where you expect to find your answer the fast way.

People like Bridge and I are probable not interested in mini-courses but in fast and adequate answers if they are looking for solutions. I thought that that's were forums are meant for.
