Default index.html shows up as "page cannot be found". Images uploading as data files

I've been editing my website through file manager but when I make the edits to the index.html file and then click on "show file", I get an error page saying "Page Cannot Be Found". I contacted my host and they said the problem is with cPanel.

I'm also noticing that NOW all my image files are being uploaded as data files when they used to upload fine.

cPanel's file manager is not the best way to edit, and maintain your site. I try and urge my clients not to use it, and instead maintain their website through a good text/html editor ( DreamWeaver is a good client shows both design and source code view ) as well as a good FTP client ( Filezilla and cuteFTP are among a few of the good programs )

    Hope That Helps

Thanks. Dreamweaver costs a fortune so I was hoping that I would be able to use the cPanel but it looks like it's not going to work.

Wish I knew there would be this kind of problem before I signed up.

It does work, just not near as reliable, I have had too many issues with it first hand, Quite some time ago, so I like the FTP method to decrease the chance of something going wrong with the transfer.

    I'm with RAIS....

I have used the File Manager in an emergency when I do not have access to files and a client wants an update, but for building my entire site or their entire site, I do not use it.

Bah, i've not heard of any major issues with the filemanager ( anyone have bugzilla reports they could show me? ).

Make sure your file is in the public_html directory, otherwise it won't be viewable. Also, make sure everything is set correctly apache and dns wise.

Well that's the thing. Everything DID work and then everything DIDN'T work.

I've only had this hosting for less than a month and for the first couple of weeks I could edit and view my index.html files within file manager. My images also uploaded as images and could be viewed but now they upload as data files.

Just over the past week all that's changed. All my files are in the public.html folder and I have not changed any of the settings. I've had my host go through everything and they say that everything is fine and it must be a problem directly with cPanel.

If the host is sure its a cPanel issue, have they contacted cPanel support on your behalf ? If not, you should perhaps ask them to do so, as that is the only way cPanel will be able to 1. become aware of the issue 2. troubleshoot it.

easy for them to blame cPanel , espeially if they dont know what it could be
    BTW : shouldnt public.html be public_html ?

And you can find some free html editors on the web , just do a google search

Obviously a typo. public.html IS public_html. Sorry for the confusion.

When I took your advice and asked my host to contact cPanel on my behalf they apologized for the tech who told me it was a cPanel problem. I still don't think they are understanding my problem as the emails I am getting from them are not addressing the problem I am describing to them.

As I've said in my 11:09p.m. post, my image files no longer upload to my public_html folder at images. My index.html folder will no longer display my page by clicking on "show file".

The best my host is telling me to do is to forget about the "show file" and just open another window to my website and view it that way. And for the image problem, they're telling me to just forget about uploading images to the file manager and purchase Dreamweaver instead.

I'm frustrated because I'm not wealthy, I was told that the file manager would work when I signed up, it DID work for about 2 weeks, and now it doesn't! Now I'm being told to just keep paying my money to them and buy other programs to do my site building.

I apologize for whining. I am just hoping that someone here will have heard of this problem and tell me an easy way to get it back to the way it was working.

Good grief, maybe time for you to find a new host, they don't sound very helpful.

Personally, I just go the cheap (free) easy way, I edit pages with notepad and upload everything through FTP or my secure shell transfer client. No muss no fuss, and works fine for html, javascript and php. I also upload my pics the same way.

IF it's a cpanel issue, your host could try updating it, which is the first thing I do when I suspect a cpanel issue, but I suspect in your case it's NOT a cpanel issue.

I wish I knew how to do what you're talking about! It sound much more trustworthy than what I have now. lol

I've talked with my host again and now they are saying that since I am using frames in my code that the index.html file cannot "view" it when I click "showfile". Again, they are saying it's a cpanel bug but will not try to fix it.

Still haven't figured out what's wrong with my images. They mentioned something about me not uploading them properly but the first 6 images uploaded fine and were made with the same program, edited the same way, and uploaded just the same as the images that now say they are data files.

The last message I got from them said this: (and I really don't know what they mean)

"Please ensure that your publishing application is transferring image files in 'binary' mode."

I'm using PhotoShop to create the images and as far as I can tell, I'm doing everything the same as I always do.
