cPanel installs PostgreSQL from your operating system software repository. We don't distribute our own binary package, unlike MySQL. If you want a newer version of PostgreSQL than is provided by RedHat or CentOS then you can look to what is provided here: PostgreSQL: Linux packages

Thanks. Yes I of course know where I can find the latest files. Problem as always is to actually INSTALL those files easily. Not sure why cpanel cannot automate that.

If I downloaded the latest "repository" will cpanel install that instead?

It's important to understand that your operating system software repository may not contain the latest version of PostgreSQL. For example, the CentOS repository includes PostgreSQL 8.1 (not 8.4).

By default, cPanel/WHM automatically calls your operating system's utility to update software supplied via its repository, for example: yum update on CentOS.

If you prefer that PostgreSQL be installed from source rather than installed based off what your operating system vendor has deemed to be the best version to use on its OS, that would best be addressed by creating a feature request.

What crap is this? Postgres Yum repository has all the latest upgrades already. For 8.x, there is 8.2.19. For 9.x there is 9.0.4. And so on: PostgreSQL RPM Repository (with Yum)

It is a Cpanel decision to "support" ancient versions of what is truly the only real FREE but enterprise grade DB out there. MySQL is a joke at high loads. It's high time Cpanel grew up and began to allow newer RPMs. I am not sure what the huge problem is.

People who themselves code PG highly recommend that we move to the latest stable version possible. There are many, many, many stability and performance improvements.

Uh, well, maybe its because you are replying to a post that way made in July 2010 and they did not have those libs when the post was written? Get a grip man.

Ok. With a grip -- they have had these for quite a while. It's up to cpanel to keep up.

The version supported it that provided by the operating system distribution:

    http://forums.cpanel.net/f145/cpanel...or-166170.html

If you would like to voice your request for cPanel to not rely on the yum repositories that CentOS and RedHat directly use for postgresql rpms, then please post in that thread for the request for cPanel to provide our own versions using other repositories.

At this time, we support the latest versions of PostgreSQL the operating system supports, meaning this version of PostgreSQL has been tested against by the OS manufacturer against the OS for stability and performance issues. You mention possibly using PostgreSQL 8.2, CloudLinux, CentOS and RHEL all support PostgreSQL 8.4.x as of writing this post.

Currently, if you install PostgreSQL 9.x, you do so at your own risk if you do so before your operating system supports it.

If you prefer that we distribute PostgreSQL like we do for MySQL, you are welcome to provide constructive feedback (preferably something more mature than "what crap is this") on the feature request for this at:

    http://forums.cpanel.net/f145/cpanel...or-166170.html

Alternatively, you can lobby the manufacturer of your operating system to accelerate testing and deployment of PostgreSQL into the operating system you use.

Why do we all need to voice our opinion in that one topic, just out of curiosity? I think that the numerous posts here asking about upgrading to newer versions of PostgreSQL should be enough justification to look into creating and maintaining a dedicated PostgreSQL repository.

People may not know how to use the existing system.

Others may not want us to divert developer resources away from other projects at the moment to accommodate that particular request.

Maybe some prefer a RPM tested by their OS vendor against their OS

That's just 3 reasons I can think of offhand.
