Post Automatically assign CPU cores to game servers ?

    Hi All,

I'll admit that this is my first time that im thinking about taking on a self-managed dedi box purely for running a load of game servers for my clan and some friends

What i want to know is that if i use CPGS to run the game servers will it automatically distribute the load created by the game servers between all of the CPU cores ?

BTW i am looking at a dual quad core xeon

Any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated

    Regards,

    ZombieKillah

I run my clans game servers

    Intel Enterprise Core2Quad Q6600
    4GB Ram
    160GB HDD

    CentOS 5.5
    2.6.18-194.3.1.el5PAE
    MySQL 5.1.45
    Apache 2.2.15
    PHP 5.3.2

I normaly run 10+ servers with over 20 MySql DB's
No problems with cpu load management!

    Thumbs up

    Hi Rasterman,

Im really glad to hear that cos i took a real big risk before i saw this reply

    Server Specs:

    Dual Quad Core Intel Xeon
    16GB RAM
    2 x 750GB Sata II Drives

Should be able to run a stupid amount of servers on that !!

I will let you know how i get on

EDIT: Just noticed that why server is running Centos 5.0 32 bit and it made me think that i need 64 bit to utilize that amount of memory.. Is that correct ?

    Regards,

You'll want 64bit to handle the 16GB ram, I think the PAE kernels can do it with 32bit but you are better off with 64bit anyway as Centos provides the packages that let you run pretty much any 32bit binary on 64bit machines.

    Hi Darren,

Thanks for confirming that for me, Centos 5.4 64 bit is now installed and the cPanel/WHM installation is almost finished

Its running the following Kernel Version: 2.6.32.2-xxxx-grs-ipv4-64

Means nothing to me lol but can you see there being any problems with that ?

    Regards,

    Iain

Looks like a BN kernel package w/ GR Security built in. That should be fine as long as the GR Security stuff isn't set too strict for the game servers, I'm not sure what limits it might impose that could upset the game servers but my imagination says it's within the realm of possibility, however I doubt you'll have an issue with it.
