Corrupt .so?

I can get the server to run for awhile, but then it stops and I get this error...

root@server# ./hlds_i686 -debug
Error:libSteamValidateUserIDTickets_i386.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Unable to load engine, image is corrupt.

What would cause that?

You'll get that error if you don't set the library path un the shell and call the hlds_$arch binary directly. The hlds_run script sets this up for you. You can do it yourself like:

# export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=".:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH"
# ./hlds_i686 -debug
