    Default Cpgs

    Hi,

i am looking to purchase cPanel and would like to host game servers aswell, does the game server feature allow the end user to install things such as mani admin plugin or is it very limited?

    Thanks

Mod's can be installed just fine! Not sure how to install mods on all servers but yes most mods will work. I believe they simply need to be dropped into the Mod's folder (thats how i got mani admin working)

    Regards,
    Scott

Yeah all Mods, and Addons can be added by using FTP. At this point there isnt a feature that allows for cPGS to automaticaly install theses mods. Hopefully it will come in a future release

You can set up any sort of mod you want, but you need to do it via FTP, manually. cPGS natively supports some mods for some games, but certainly not all. There are overrides available so the main server admin (root) can set a specific command line for a game install and bypass the automatic command line generation that is normally used in the event that the automatic one doesn't do what you want. You can also make your own cpgs packages that are already set up with a certain mod and config if you are going for a specific niche.

I'm not sure I understand "upload it to an FTP of their own" . They can use their account's FTP account assuming it gives them access to their /home/user/ directory, however it won't create an FTP account on a remote server, nor will it work if they are trying to use their own server without cPGSD installed, like just uploading the game server files to some random FTP server won't work, it has to be on a server controlled by cPanel/cPGS.

cPanel creates an ftp account when it is set up that points to /home/username/ . cPGS is not involved in this however, due to the fact that it also runs on servers without cPanel installed. There are an infinite number of FTP server + user authorization setups possible on these servers, so cPGS leaves it up to the server admin to create any needed FTP accounts. Since most linux distros use the same system auth mechanism, it is able to use adduser to set up a remote system user, but that is the extent of remote user support.
So if you are running games on a cPanel server, then the client can access their game servers by using their ftp account, otherwise you'll have to create one for them on a remove server. If the remote server supports user accounts FTPing in (via PAM or whatever), then it should also work just like the cPanel server.

Is it possible for cPGS to automatically create user accounts in whm. Because once you setup them up as you would any normal web hosting customer, they get a public_html files etc in there ftp. It makes no difference to me as they cant get any sites live as im not running nameservers or anything like that...

But for those you are running game servers on a "web server" it may be a problem, as there have free access to hosting.

I havent looked into it in much detail but i believe you can look at using the httpdconf file to restrict certain filetypes in the public_html dir. So if they upload index.php, index.html, index.htm and they all all denied for that user in the httpdconf file then it would stop that page loading.

Only problem with that method is that you would have to manually edit the httpdconf file each time a user is added

There's no way currently to have a user created to use with cPGS on a cPanel server, via cPanel that is not considered a cPanel user. You can give them a fake domain like (game.server rather than domain.com), disallow shell access or any of that, and don't allow http://ip.ad.dr.ess/~user/ to work and it shouldn't be much of a problem. You can also give them the "gs" theme which gives them no access to anything other than cPGS. On the remote servers, cPGS can (in WHM) create users to run games, but locally the user has to exist as a cPanel user before it will show up in WHM or be allowed to log in to the cPanel interface.
