Default Game Server Management Question (Client Side)

    Hello,
cPGS has a nice interface as one of the cPanel sections, however it allows only to start/stop a server, edit a startup string and other very basic configs. Most of the customers would want to customise their servers with addons and such and it would not be a problem if cPGS would run on a same machine as cPanel, as they would have direct fto access to server files. However, in my case it is running on a separate machine and the only "safe" way to give customers access to server files would be separate FTP account on cPGS server.
I'm interested if this scheme is commonly used and if there are any issues I shall be aware of, before using this scheme in a live production environment.
    Thank you in advance

    Nice idea!
I would like to see this one seriously looked at as it needs to be done (FTP Access for non-cpanel box's).

Currently, giving the users an FTP account on the gameserver machine is the best way to go about this. FTP allows them to upload addons and edit other config files directly without having to give them full shell access for SSH, however many do that as well.

This is a pretty common request, having cPGS allow end users to upload maps and their own addons and such. This wouldn't be a problem at all if it only ran on cPanel machines since I'd have that API layer I could use to add an FTP account for the gameserver install. The problem is that most folks running serious gameservers are doing so on dedicated machines without the cPanel overhead. Many of these are on distros that cPanel itself doesn't support (ex: gentoo, ubuntu). In reality there is no way I could foresee each FTP server install on all servers and craft a way to add a user to the FTP setup on the machine; one small customization to a config path or something could break it entirely. The only real possibility is for me to add direct file transfer into cPGS, this means that for remote servers, file uploads would go from the client's browser, to cPGS on the cPanel machine, to cPGS on the remote machine, rather than from client to remote machine. This is an obvious waste of bandwidth, adds some more points of failure and requires the use of browser uploads which can't be resumed if broken and aren't very well suited for large uploads. I can't imagine using this setup for a 1GB addon on a 384kbit upstream cable modem or something like that. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get around this problem or another way of looking at it, other than the current method of giving them an FTP account on the gameserver box ?

I still want, need and wait for that.

Thank you for a replay Darren.
I fully agree, uploading files onto cPGS(cPanel) and then onto cPGS(Server Machine) would really mess things up.
In my mindset, giving FTP access on a remote machine is quite acceptable. The main question was if it is a widely used scheme, which I guess it is .
Of course the automation of user/account creation on a remote server would be a great feature, but I guess we could live without it for some time.
