    Question Optimizing Server for cPGS?

    Hi All,

I am looking for help with optimizing my LINUX server to use cPGS. I don't run anything else other than Counter-Strike: Source (and eventually CSGO). What can I do to help optimize my system? What services are okay to disable? I also use ConfigServer Firewall for some iptables protection as well. Are there any kernel optimization tutorials I could follow to help make sure my servers are running at peak performance?

I use CentOS 5.7 64-bit. I can get my specs if you need it for any reason, let me know. Appreciate the suggestions!

Someone will add something of more value if they see fit I'm sure. The biggest thing you could do to make sure your game server runs good, is to have the server with a provider on a fat pipe. A good connection is important I would think.

Depending on what time of day you're playing you might want to set cPanel updates and backups to Manual to keep them from running. CSF server check gives a list of many things you can disable that can be helpful as well.

I'm not aware of any kernel optimization tutorials that would make the games work better.

Most of the old 1000hz kernel guides and such are not very useful for CS and friends these days, as Valve has forced them all to run at a tickrate of 66 I believe. There are no cPGS specific tweaks to be made, anything you do should be for the games you intend to run. In fact there is no current documentation for cPGS at all and won't be until the 1.0 release when it gets out of BETA.
Really unless you are seeing problems, the games should run very well by default, they are written and set up to perform well without having to tweak anything.

I see, I was more so thinking of services for cPanel that I can disable because I don't host any websites or anything else on the box. I have disabled mysql, exim, etc. But there are some things I don't know are okay to disable. I'm trying to make sure that nothing is using memory that it shouldn't be or taking resources away.

Interesting, I've never actually tried seeing what can be disabled on a running cPanel server until it starts breaking. As far as cPGS is concerned, crond, cPGSD and cPanel & WHM are the only things that need to be running. cPanel itself may complain about something like apache being disabled; I'd say give it a shot and see what happens. Also be sure to leave sshd running
