Adding plugins to squirrelmail and keeping them over multiple upgrades

I want to enable spam-buttons and the compatibility plugins I have them installed now but the next update that happens will wipe them out.

I understand how the overlay.tar will work but what I need to know is after the plugins are overlayed back into the plugins directory, how to I re-enable them with the config script?
