Could not edit password file : No such file or directory

Customer just called and said he used the Cpanel interface to delete some old email accounts. When he was done he found nobody could log back into their email via any method.

Upon trying to change any of the passwords via Cpanel control panel they get the error :

There was a problem changing the password. Show Details

clicking on "show details" produced:

Could not edit password file : No such file or directory

anyone know what might have happened?. What file(s) should I try to restore (files/folders) to get this working again ?.

thanks.

ps- system is running Freebsd 6.2 / cPanel Version 11.24.4-CURRENT / cPanel Build 36167

The files in question are stored at:

/home/user/etc/example.com

There should be at least a passwd and shadow file present in that directory. If a backup of the account exists, restore those files. Otherwise touch them. Ownership should be user:mail
