    Default Email Garbage

    Hi,

I am wondering if anyone can offer some suggestions about dealing with garbage email. Is there a way to set up email in cPanel to have it not deliver any mail that is not addressed to a specific email address. I have two email addresses set up, one dcheke@textualcreations.ca and one dbcheke@textualcreations. Those are the only ones that I have set up and I get many many emails per day with ficticious emails like zpyy@textualcreations.ca which I am getting very tired of having to deal with. I tried blocking all the garbage but the first letters are always different. Any suggestions? Perhaps someone knows how to address this with MS Outlook 2003 as an alternative.

I'm glad you asked! There is a pretty simple way to get this done:
    - Log in to your cPanel,
    - "Mail,"
    - "Default Addresses,"
    - "Set Default Addresses," <-- At the bottom of the page
    - Select your main domain from the dropdown, not a subdomain or anything and put ":fail: no such address here" in the text box, without the quotes, and
    - Click on the "Change Button."

There is a very extreme application built into cPanel. It's called Box Trapper. When someone sends you a message, it will send them back a message and hold their message until they reply to the box trapper message to prove they aren't an automated computer.

It's really horrible when you actually want an automated message to come through, like Bank Alerts, Lost Password Requests, etc.

Make sure you have Spam Assassin on. It doesn't block 100% (yet) but its really great.

As far as using Outlook to do it, you can setup "Message Rules" but you say the emails are always different, so these Rules will not help.

    Good luck!

    Thanks Mark,

I guess I didn't understand that option when I was previously looking at it on the cPanel. I have now entered the :fail: no such address here item and will see how that works. I had assumed that those emails with the ficticious addresses were still 'routed' since they had the correct end part of the address (ie: @textualcreations.ca)

I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

    Best wishes,
    Don

Yes. There are a lot of settings in cPanel. A few years ago, the first time I logged into it, I explored everything and familiarized myself with the system. I recommend you check out all of the settings, so when something comes up, you'll know exactly where to go.
