Forwarding Spam Assassin to another account??

Hi,

Here's what I want to do (based on advice found on another thread):

* Create a new account, ie hold@yourdomain.com
* Enable boxtrapper only on that email
* Configure Spam Assassin to forward spam emails to hold@yourdomain.com

-- but I cant do the last step because there seems to be no mechanism in Spam Assassin to "foward spam emails". My email host uses cPanel 11 and it seems as though there were a lot more configuration options in Spam Assassin before they switched from cPanel 10.

I would recommend creating a mail filter that would forward spam emails to the separate address. When you enable SpamBox, all that does is create an Account Level email filter. Simply edit your account level email filters, specifically the one for SpamBox (which will be clearly labeled as such) and you can then customize the behavior of that rule. By default, it will simply send the mail to a folder named spam.

The verification account runs BoxTrapper, which I've configured to forward verified emails to the account I use for reading. The combination works great.

I do have one question though: Is there a way to configure the BoxTrapper account to redirect verified/whitelisted emails so that a copy is not retained in the BoxTrapper account?

I enabled SpamAssassin on my main account (the one that people email me at). I set it to a low threshold (2). Then I created a user-level filter to forward anything flagged as spam to the verifier account. The verifier account has BoxTrapper enabled (but not SpamAssassin); the main account does not have BoxTrapper enabled.

I read my mail from a hotmail account (because its HTTP-based access protocol works well with the Outlook smart client from both home and work); so I configured BoxTrapper to forward any validated messages to my hotmail account. Likewise, I created a user filter for my main account to forward to hotmail the messages that don't need to go to the email verifier account.

I listed the user-level filters for the main account below. Additionally, in the SpamAssassin configuration settings, I set report_safe to 0, so that the subject line wouldn't be modified (spam is marked in the headers). Finally, I seeded the whitelist for BoxTrapper with my contact list.

The end result is that the junk mail list I have to check is very small (less than one message per week), yet it should be rare that a human gets a BoxTrapper verification request. The one other thing that makes this system work is that I have a separate account for email not sent by people.

Filters:
- Spam status begins with Yes: redirect to verifier account
- Spam status begins with Yes: stop processing rules
- From matches regex .*: redirect to hotmail and discard message

This is an effective way to discard obvious spam and place possible legitimate emails into another account using email filtering:

Filter: Any Header that matches regex "X-Spam-Score: ([2][1-9]|[3-4][0-9])"
Destination: "spam_holding_account@yourdomain"

Filter: Any Header that matches regex "X-Spam-Score: ([5-9][0-9]|[1-9][0-9]{2,})"
Destination: "Discard"
