Default Hosted Open Source Email Clients?

What I'm looking to do is create a and use an open-source - or paid for, if open-source projects aren't recommended - mail client that I can install on the domain and brand.

    My questions are....

    1. Do you recommend a specific one?
    2. What should I look for in one?
    3. If you used this type of system in the past and have decided to stop, why did you not like it in the end?

I know the last one is a little odd, but I've never gone this direction but would like to dive into it and am trying to save time by not wading through as much garbage issues as possible. Any input in the right direction would help my research greatly. Thanks in advance.

I forgot to mention that I'm aware of the standard but I would like to move away from that....that's why I'm researching. Again, Thanks.
