    Default incoirrect email bounce mesages

    My web page host uses cpanel, at the moment whenever an email is sent the sender gets a bounce message "the inbox is full etc" cpanel handles the email correctly and I get a copy fowarded to me, the inbox is empty, any ideas how to stop an incorrect bounce message

    So you're saying that a mailbox you're fairly certain is empty is generating a message to everyone trying to email that address, and the message says the mailbox is full?

    yes that is correct and also the emails are andles perfectly just the sender is getting an incorrect error message

    hi I have spam assassin and spambox enabled and I still get this: it happens with attachments
    A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
    recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

    chrisj@cmjconsultants.org
    mailbox is full: retry timeout exceeded

    Hey there Chris,

    I'm assuming the email that bounces is sent to the forwarded email address (which in turn sends it to the final destination address).

    Chances are you have both a fowarder and an email account set up for the chrisj@cmjconsultants.org email address which is a valid setup but may (like you've noticed) cause some issues if the mailbox isn't regularly cleaned.

    If it is what I think it is you're basically seeing the following:
    • Email is sent to chrisj@cmjconsultants.org and is forwarded to the final destination email account as expected.
    • The server the forwarder is set up on also tries to deliver the email locally to the existing email account for chrisj@cmjconsultants.org that exists on the server, however finding the email account full it's bounced with the error you see.

    So in essence you have a forwarder and email account set up on the server for the same email address. If you empty out the email account chrisj@cmjconsultants.org on the server where the forwarder is set up, or alternatively simply delete the actual email account for that address (the forwarder will continue to function as it does not rely on an email account existing for the address it's setup for), it should resolve your issue.


    That's quite a bit of assuming.. but I've seen similar issues before.

    As you suggested I have deleted the email account for chrisj@cmjconsultants.org, the email forwarder still forwards perfectly and no more error message.
