iPhone - "bad certificate" errors trying to receive email

We have a client trying to connect via imapd-ssl and pop3d-ssl to our server running standard set up courier imap. He is getting "bad certificate" and the maillogs show him being disconnected instantly.

A quick google suggests he has to download and install our server cert to
his iphone...is this the case? It all sounds a bit OTT.

Are you using a self-signed cert for POP3 and IMAP by chance? When I am on mobile devices, this is typically the cause of such errors when I encounter them.
