Default Message not sent. Server replied: Authentication failed

    Hello guys,
I have the following problem with a single cPanel account:
No mails on this account work, neither pop3 or webmail. In Squirell i get the following error:
    Code:
    Message not sent. Server replied:

        Authentication failed
        535 Incorrect authentication data
The account was restored using a full backup, so i believe the old provider was using another OS than CentOS so something went wrong ... any advice what i should check ?

P.S. All other accounts on the current server work just fine, that`s the only cPanel having issues, so i believe its a configuration problem somewhere on this account`s config files.

I'm also having trouble with this. The problems started recently when our servers were moved. The full error is:

"There was an error sending your message: authentication failure [SMTP: Invalid response code received from server (code: 535, response: Incorrect
    authentication data)]"

Make sure that this or any other domain with this problem is NOT in /etc/demodomains file and/or /etc/demousers. Disabled the demo mode from the WHM and you should be good to go.

I can also confirm that I have experienced this issue.

In my case its when you try to access your webmail box through cpanel
The reason this goes wrong is because it tries to authenticate itself to SMTP with your CPANEL user info. now since your CPanel user has nothing to do with SMTP, it will not properly authenticate and give that error.

Instead try to access your webmail through DOMAIN.com/webmail ,
    This should work.

Now obviously you should also be able to use your webmail through cpanel,
this is a bug and will probably be fixed later on.

Please could anyone else that experienced this issue REPLY and confirm that this was the same issue?

I am getting this error on Horde using
    cPanel 11.24.7-E34209 - WHM 11.24.4 - X 3.9
    CENTOS 5.2 i686 on standard

There was an error sending your message: authentication failure [SMTP: Invalid response code received from server (code: 535, response: Incorrect authentication data)]

I also get errors in all of the other webmail programs as well.

Yes, thats correct. All we did was turn off:
Allow mail account authentication using the password of the domain owner's account- in the Mail - Tweak Settings and issue is resolved. It now asks the user for their mail password when logging into webmail via cpanel or externally and mail is being sent correctly.

The thing that fixed my issue -
was a few things - first of all I wasnt getting updted files as the repository I was using shut down and I didnt know it.

Second - Cpanel support went in and looked at it, and regenerated the passwords file. That corrected the issue.

Anyone know how to regenerate the passwords file? Getting the same error and tried all other suggestions on similar posts in forum.

We had the same symptoms on one of our servers after unsuspending an account. The problems were limited to the unsuspended account.

None of the suggestions above resolved the issue (they weren't listed in demodomains or demo accounts, the Tweak settings flag wasn't set, etc). Also tried logging in with user+domain.com instead of using '@' but that made no difference.

Additionally tried restarting Exim and changing the passwords but that didn't resolve either.

The customer still has a couple of mailboxes that they check but don't send from that I left in place. Please feel free to contact us if you would like me to try something on the remaining accounts or for more info.

    Hope that helps,

    Chris

Try suspending then un-suspending the account again.

    Doesn't work.

The only solution that i found that worked was to set squirrelmail to send via sendmail and bypass smtp entirely.

So this issue only affected Squirrelmail?

No it affects all webmails, i fixed squirrelmail so the client had at least one webmail that worked. Of course on each update squirrelmail is set back to smtp

If the client logs directly into webmail (url:2096)then webmail can send. It's only if the client logs into their webmail via the admin control panel webmail links - that the webmails get an authorisation error.
