Question MX Record - IP Address

    Hi,

    Newbie to this forum

I am completing a domain transfer for a client from one host to another as we are the new web providers for the client.

The old web designer is trying to get us to re-direct the MX record to his current mail server IP (78.33.**.***), because the client doesn't want their email to go down (not even for a short period of time).

I can see an option on our cPanel for the client called MX Entry Maintenance but this seems to only re-direct to a domain if im not mistaken... not an IP address... any help on how to do this? Or is this the wrong way to do this..?

    Cheers
    Sam

    Default

MX records have to point to a hostname. They cannot use an IP address.

You would need to create an A record in the DNS zone for example:

    mx IN A xx.xx.xx.xx

Where xx.xx.xx.xx refers to the IP address of the mail server you want to use.

Then change the MX records to:

    domain.com. IN MX 10 mx.domain.com.
