i forgot to add that i'm running the latest STABLE.
apparently, when this happens spamd leaves stale files under /tmp that look like:
.spamassassin3588n4bC58tmp
.spamassassin3588LULIeqtmp
.spamassassin3833pu0bGMtmp
.spamassassin3833gGGU9Jtmp
.spamassassin3833X6GTICtmp
.spamassassin40191bJQi9tmp
.spamassassin4019pozjL5tmp
.spamassassin4019hhqbQ3tmp
.spamassassin4019ChKC7jtmp
.spamassassin4019VvbNzctmp
.spamassassin4019moZJ0ktmp
.spamassassin56302m5CJstmp
.spamassassin5630MXOzUKtmp
all of them are either 0 bytes in size of if not then they contain base64 encoded data!!!
something is fishy....
