Default SpamAssassin Does Not Rewrite Subject Line Anymore

Until 8/7/09, the subject line was rewritten for suspected SPAM; e.g.

    Subject: ***SPAM 8.3*** BUY VIAGRA!!

However, since 8/7/09, the subject line is no longer rewritten, but the Internet headers show:

    Subject: VIAGRA
    .
    .
    X-Spam-Subject: ***SPAM 8.3*** VIAGRA

Was this feature removed in a cPanel update on 8/7/09? Can the subject line not be rewritten anymore?

It was, IMHO, the main feature of SpamAssasin; to get the subject line rewritten with the score.

This feature is still present in cPanel. You can configure this by going to WHM -> Service Configuration -> Exim Configuration Editor. The setting for customizing the text is:

SpamAssassinTM: Text to add to the subject line of messages marked as spam ($spam_score and others [see ?] are acceptable).
Also, for this subject rewriting functionality to be enabled, be sure the following setting is checked:

    SpamAssassinTM: Global Subject Rewrite

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    In the advanced configuration editor

and the exim configuration file says this
    ######################################################################

    # There are no rewriting specifications in this default configuration file.

    Thanks

On 11.25 WHM/Cpanel - none of the options you mentioned are there....

Can somebody from Cpanel please advise why the options are deleted from WHM?

This feature is still present in cPanel/WHM 11.25, but you will need root-level access to see this screen in your WHM interface.

If you do have root access, in WHM -> Service Configuration -> Exim Configuration Editor, do you see:

    SpamAssassinTM: Global Subject Rewrite [?]
It is down in the "Filters" section of that screen.

It also depends upon whether you've customized your Exim Configuration. I know that on a stock system I will add a few HELO ACLs, will set Spam Assassin to rewrite, and will copy the default filter over to a custom filename and then edit out the "EML" entries so that it does not block emails. Once I am done, if I go back into the Exim Configuration Editor i will not see the option for the Subject line rewrite.

Usually I think it is best to mark down your current settings found in the Exim Configuration and then restore everything to defaults (ACLs/Filters/etc). Then modify your spam subject line rewriting and apply any other options for filters, ACLs, etc. in the Exim Configuration editor.

For years now I've experienced this phenomenon, and it is because of customizations I've done. I live with it since I know it works like it is supposed to unless I make certain customizations.

Thanks man, this restored my sanity after quite a bit of head scratching...

    We shouldn't have to though.

If I make _ANY_ modification to Exim configuration, Main >> Service Configuration >> Exim Configuration Editor >> Filters section is paralysed completely, at least in cPanel 11.25.0-R43277 - WHM 11.25.0! To reproduce, "Reset All Configs to Defaults", then check/uncheck any of the settings in Exim Configuration Editor. Filter section options disappear; "Revert to Default" becomes non-sticky. This is a bug [moan] though it became a hurdle to file a bug report since the demise of the tracker :( [/moan]

cPanel 11.25.0-R44718 - WHM 11.25.0 (and maybe others)
If you made _any_ modification to exim configuration this is what you will be seeing. I suspect this is the result of some over-zealous hiding with javascript. Click on "Revert to Default" and select "SpamAssassinTM: Global Subject Rewrite [?]" option and the missing field should return, though it is not sticky, will revert to hiding again.

Strange thing is that SpamAssassin Global rewrite stopped working on all servers. So that is not only a "javascript hidden field". Hidden field shouldn't change configuration without even submitting that form...??

Can someone from cPanel please say something about this... Is this some new known bug or what?

    Thank you.

It looks like that we did submit that broken form at some point on some servers, so it looks like this is really just a stupid Javascript problem. Actually form is totaly messed up after you make any modification and submit it the first time. We never had this issue before, or we never noticed it, but it's here now and it's very annoying...

Is cPanel aware of this issue?

To properly report suspected bugs the information must be submitted via a support request, such as by using the link seen in the upper-right corner of the cPanel forums, labeled Bugs, that allows anyone to directly Submit a Bug Report; the cPanel Bugzilla site is closed and now redirects to the aforementioned link for direct bug report submissions and technical assistance. By using our ticket system reported bugs can be more accurately diagnosed, investigated, and properly escalated at greater speed and efficiency; this also ensures proper attention is dedicated to each bug report received.

There are a number of changes, including both bug fixes and feature enhancements, in cPanel 11.25.1 that should fully alleviate the reported symptoms. When testing the latest in BETA I was unable to reproduce the difficulty.

For reference, in 11.25.1, disabled configuration options in the Exim Configuration Editor will only be grayed-out and are no longer completely hidden; please also note that Reset Configuration area is relocated to the Advanced Editor section.

cPanel version 11.25.1 recently became available for testing in the EDGE build tree; however, for production systems I recommend waiting until 11.25.1 reaches CURRENT, RELEASE, or STABLE, depending upon your update preferences.

For additional information, including the latest versions, build numbers, and change log detail, please refer to the following resources:
