Exclamation What is the proper way to set up external mail server in cpanel?

I have a new client that hosts his own exchange server. I have the server IP, and have set up a subdomain of mail.domain.com to point to that IP.I have then set up the mx entry to use mail.domain.com

However it is not routing there. I removed the domain from the localdomain list and moved it to the remotedomains list.

What I am doing wrong - I really your feedback and help on this.

I changed the MX to point to mail.domain.com, and then create a CNAME for both the mail and www.mail and still nothing.

    The mail log reads:
2008-02-29 11:20:44 H=gv-out-0910.google.com [216.239.58.185] F=<> temporarily rejected RCPT <hairedbw8@domain.com>: lowest numbered MX record points to local host

I think it's an A record that you need. I have a number of these setup and they are all...

    domain.com. 14400 IN MX 0 mail.domain.com.
    mail 14400 IN A 11.22.333.444

and then move the domain from
    /etc/localdomains

    to
    /etc/remotedomains

Default Does cpanel then process mail?

In this set up forwarding mail to exchange do you still set up mailbox so nonexistant addresses are rejected and is mail still filtered for spam & anti-virus
    Thanks!

In the setup mentioned above all mail gets automaticaly redirected to your external exchange server, without affecting your cPanel exim mail server

    Apparently uncheck this box
Always accept mail locally even if the primary mx does not point to this server. (Domain owned by phillibe)
in dns editing moves the domain from localdomain to remote. Thanks you for your assistance it worked.

    Hi,

May i know if by setting up MX record to use the external mailserver, does it forward all the email sent using sendmail Eg: php mail() script to use the external mail server ?

Or it only works fior the user who use SMTP or IMAP to sent out email only ?
